Meet Jillian Higgins - Assistant Swim Coach

I grew up in South Florida and joined the swim team at age eight. From then on, the water was my second home. I swam year round for the next 12 year. As I look back, my two most notable accomplishments were placing at my high school State Championships and making it to the top 16 in my event at Nationals when I swam for Wheaton College. But above all, swimming taught me dedication and endurance. It takes diligent practice and hard work to succeed.

I also love working with kids. As a mother of two I have seen firsthand the wonderful things God can do in kids' lives when his Word is placed in their hearts. During my time in Wheaton College, I worked with groups of young children in the Children's ministry at College Church. From the serious discussions at overnight camp to the energetic games at the church events, I witnessed God transforming children's hearts through the power of his Gospel.

Meet Laura Witt - Assistant Swim Coach

Four-time state qualifier at Carl Sandburg high school in Orland Park Illinois. 1990 national champion in 100 and 200 freestyle for Wheaton College. BA degree in psychology from Wheaton College-1990. 12 year age group swimming coach from 1990- 2002. 24 year career in the long-term care industry.

Meet Grayson Lewis - Assistant Swim Coach

A graduate student in Wheaton College's Clinical Psychology program, Grayson has been swimming competitively since he was 10 years old and learned how to teach swim lessons as a lifeguard while in high school with the YMCA. During the past 9 years, Grayson has taught swimmers aged 3 to 25 of various skill levels the individualized steps many of his students have needed to further develop. From North Carolina to California, he looks forward to helping your child learn how to swim well and love the water.

The following was written by a former GWS swimmer for a college assignment reflecting on people who had been an influence in his life:

"I remember Coach Tom with fondness. Swim team was an awesome time of my life, and while it was a short period, I experienced a lot of growth. As I began swimming I remember coming home completely discouraged. Although I was a 7th grader I had to swim with the younger kids, because I was in no way fast enough to keep up with my own age group. Swim team was hard, and I wanted to quit. I remember one day after practice Coach Tom approached me, and complimented me. I was confused at first, until I realized what was happening. He was complimenting my willingness to stick with swimming even though I was struggling and not as good as kids my own age. That was who Coach Tom was. He was able to see in me a discipline, and motivation that I was unaware I possessed. Because of that I wanted to keep working at it, and try to keep getting better as a swimmer. As a result I started becoming not just disciplined at swimming but in life as well. I was influenced to become the kind of person that doesn’t quit. All because a Coach took the time to compliment a 7th Grader on an attribute he did not even know he had."   David H.
